Chan May Centrally located between historic cities, the working port of Chan May is the gateway to Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue, the former imperial city. Da Nang, home to the famous China Beach, has one of the most beautiful stretches of sand in central Vietnam and can be reached after an approximate one-hour drive from Chan May Port via either the Hai Van Tunnels or Hai Van Pass. It was on Da Nang’s coast where the first U.S. troops landed on March 8, 1965. As the war progressed, the airport’s runway was extended to become the longest in all of Southeast Asia. Da Nang fell to the Viet Cong in March 1975; this signified South Vietnam's defeat in the war. Despite its war-torn history, Da Nang is one of the most progressive cities in Vietnam, taking advantage of the new free-market principle. Charming Hoi An is an ancient trading town with shops, art galleries and restaurants as located approximately a 90-minute drive away.
